Our research focuses on the characterization of materials and water in the geologic environment or in civil engineering contexts.

This includes geo‑resource engineering (covering near surface exploration technology, drilling technology and well construction, aquifer engineering, and hydrogeology), as well as non‑destructive testing, production control and monitoring on land and in water, and applied geophysics for near‑surface investigations and applications related to groundwater and the environment.

To study the surrounding environment, we often use various physical properties of materials and determine them with different types of measurement equipment — this is commonly referred to as geophysical measurements. The processes that formed the ground are just as important as the measurement results, which is why we have a strong foundation in geology.

Sometimes the materials are not created by geological processes, but by humans. A typical example is constructed structures made of steel and concrete. Even here, it is possible to use physics and measurements of material properties — we refer to this as non‑destructive testing.
